Testing Cutney for a Modern Web Design Project
I was working on a new boutique online store for a small creative brand, and I needed a font that would stand out without overwhelming the design. After some research, I landed on Cutney, a graffiti-styled display font with a bold, street art vibe. The first thing I noticed was how it brought energy to the hero section—its angular edges and dynamic strokes gave the headline a sense of movement and attitude.
As I tested Cutney in different sections of the website, I found it worked best for large headers and call-to-action buttons. Its strong visual presence made it ideal for drawing attention, especially when paired with high-contrast backgrounds. For example, placing it over an image banner with a dark overlay created a striking focal point that felt both modern and edgy.
One of the key considerations was readability. While Cutney is definitely a display font, I made sure not to use it for body copy or long paragraphs. Instead, I paired it with a clean sans serif font like Montserrat for the main content. This combination kept the design balanced and ensured users could read through the product descriptions and details without strain.
On mobile screens, I adjusted the font size slightly to ensure legibility. The character shapes in Cutney are bold enough to remain visible even at smaller sizes, which helped maintain a consistent look across devices. I also tested it against light and dark backgrounds to make sure it didn’t lose its impact. On lighter tones, the contrast was sharp and clear; on darker ones, the font still stood out thanks to its high-contrast outlines.
When designing the landing page for the online store, I used Cutney for the main headline and secondary headings. It added a layer of personality to the brand’s digital identity, aligning with their creative and rebellious aesthetic. For the product banners, I experimented with using Cutney in shorter phrases like “Limited Edition” or “New Arrival,” which helped highlight key selling points without cluttering the layout.
Another area where Cutney shined was in the header navigation. I used it sparingly for the logo text and major menu items, giving the site a cohesive yet distinctive feel. It wasn’t overused, which prevented the design from feeling too chaotic. The font’s unique style became a subtle but effective branding element that reinforced the overall theme of the site.
For the blog section, I considered using Cutney for post titles and featured headlines. It worked well when placed above images or as part of a callout box, adding visual interest while maintaining clarity. However, I avoided using it for subheadings or sidebars, as those areas required more straightforward typography for easy scanning.
Font pairing played a big role in this project. By combining Cutney with a minimalist sans serif, I achieved a balance between creativity and usability. This approach is common in web design, where a decorative display font can enhance the visual appeal without compromising the user experience.
I also checked the font’s technical aspects before finalizing the design. Cutney offered multiple weights and styles, which gave me flexibility in different design scenarios. It supported a wide range of languages and had good multilingual support, making it suitable for international audiences. The webfont availability was smooth, and the file formats were optimized for fast loading, which is essential for performance-driven websites.
Considering the commercial font license, I made sure the usage aligned with the project scope. Since the site was for a small business, the licensing terms were manageable and cost-effective. This made Cutney a practical choice for a brand looking to invest in quality design assets without breaking the budget.
In the end, Cutney became a defining element of the website’s visual language. It brought a fresh, youthful energy that matched the brand’s identity and helped create a more polished online experience. Whether used for headers, banners, or logos, the font added a touch of personality that elevated the entire design without sacrificing functionality or readability.
